De kleine genootschappen, die het eerst in de 16 de eeuw bij de Spaanscbe legers ontstonden, toen zij gestadig op vreemden bodem streden, werden kameraadschappen genoemd. De deelgenooten van zulk een kameraadschap legerden gezamenlijk onder dezelfde tent. Betekenis: • 'n Goeie vriend; makker; maat; vriend; kornuit. • Iemand wat saam net jou in 'n oorlog veg; medesoldaat; krysmakker. • Sosialis of aanhanger van 'n totalitêre regime; lid van 'n kommunistiese party of titel vir so 'n persoon. Gebruik: • Hy en sy kameraad is al weer in die bure se vrugteboord.

Kameraad betekenis de kameraad m. vriend; makker; maat; (in overdrachtelijke zin): in de oorlog en nadien in het communisme ook gebruikt als aanduiding voor gelijkgestemde, i.c. lid van de NSB, vaak afgekort tot Kam., of de (communistische) Partij. Tegenwoordig nog wel sarcastisch gebruikt ter aanduiding van aanhanger van een totalitair regime.
